As for placenta eating, the only plausible reason I can think of is that wolves are nearby and you’re afraid they will be attracted to it if you don’t eat it. (And, you’ve already licked the baby clean.)

Call me cray cray, but I don’t consider placenta-eating to be all that out there. (Did I eat mine? Hell no! But to each their own.) Placenta-eating seems to be becoming a minor Hollywood trend. January Jones did it – she dehydrated the organ and had it put into pill form which she then consumed. Woody Harrelson reportedly ate his wife’s placenta. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit if by the time we’re grandparents, all the cool kids will be doing it.
