Riffing off the V.S. Naipaul controversy, Megan McArdle writes a long post about authors and politics. I had no idea that L.M. Montgomery was such a sad figure.
14 Strange Hotels in Great Britain
Just made reservations for a hotel in Truro, MA for July 4th weekend. Recommendations welcome.

ROFL, MH, because I know it’s you. 🙂
Laura, Province Lands BIke Trails. Wiley Park in Eastham for kettle pond swimming. Wellfleet for artsy town stuff. Nauset Beach, walk up to see the Marconi stuff. Take the kids to the Wellfleet Drive-In. Rock Harbor in Orleans at sunset with the tide coming in. Trust me. Dolphin Fleet does a good whale watch. Walk up to Race Point. Sundae School Ice Cream in Orleans.
I’m feeling a Cape trip coming on, but we’re so totally booked this summer.

I am so envious! Moby Dick’s. Arnold’s. Great and Long Pond’s in Wellfleet. Fish from Hatch’s. Ice cream from pretty much anywhere.

Without reading the MM, I will venture that Ta-Nehisi Coates (with Hilzoy, from his comments) is better on Naipaul.

Arnold’s! I was on my way back from Arnold’s when I broke my ankle two years ago. Ah, memories.

Out on Cape Cod for the holiday, Laura? Bizarre–we’re going to be out in Massachusetts for a family reunion on Independence Day as well. And we thought about going to the Cape as well, but decided it was too far, and too expensive, given our time limitations. So instead, I think we’ll be hitting a beach somewhere in New Hampshire, within reasonable driving distance from Boston. Any recommendations?
Oh, and I suppose I ought to mention: after the Fourth, we’ll be heading for Morris Plains, NJ, to stay with friends and experience NYC. Your neck of the woods, eh?

Families from this area go to Crane Beach: http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/northeast-ma/crane-beach-on-the-crane.html.
To the south of Boston, there’s Horseneck Beach: http://www.yelp.com/biz/horseneck-beach-state-reservation-westport.
Horseneck is not on Cape Cod, so you won’t get caught in bridge traffic.
At any beach, the parking fills up early on good summer beach days.
