What does Chernobyl look like now? Lots of albino birds, I guess.
I've been looking at open houses for the past couple of Sundays. The staged homes are getting offers that day. The sadder, Grandma houses are sitting. Here are some tips to get a good deal on your home.
Love this article mocking actresses for chowing down during interviews, so they can pretend that they are effortlessly thin.
The New Republic owns the fact that it doesn't have enough women journalists. Jonathan Chait says they can't find enough women to write opinion pieces. Call me.

Oh My that article on actresses eating is hysterical.

There’s got to be some reason for these girls taking an interview. The inner dialog will be something like this. “Spend half an hour talking with that asshole? Oh well, at least I get a cheeseburger and fries!”

TNR’s hiring culture may tend to overlook women because the people in charge aren’t interested in women, period.
From Steve Sailer’s (yes, I know, I know) site:
“Gawker has an inconvenient question about these articles [about TNR]:
“Why Won’t Anyone Tell You that Marty Peretz Is Gay?
“Well, that would raise questions about a long string of Peretz’s bright young men, stretching through Andrew Sullivan all the way back to the 17-year-old Al Gore in 1965.”

If they can’t find women they’re not looking hard. I could get them 20-30 who could write more interesting things than most of their op-eds. Laura’s top of the list, of course.

Mmm, Prof. Brighouse and I don’t agree on much, but we both have the same woman on the top of our lists.

Drop the staged houses from your list? You can paint and decorate, and you’ll probably be happier if you can decide on the colors. You’ve renovated your own house, so you must be able to estimate how much it would cost to brighten up a Grandma house. Most buyers have no imagination.
Some Grandmas (or maiden aunts) in our area have taken things to an extreme. I do think you should look for indoor plumbing and insulation.

My mother-in-law remained elegantly slim until menopause, at which point she quit smoking. She did not diet, and she ate large portions. She grew very large very quickly in her 60s.
My daughter seems to have inherited this metabolism. She’s heard multiple parental warnings about good eating habits.
I’d like to laugh at the eating actresses too, but some people really can eat. I assume they have personal chefs and trainers, too–it’s possible to stay slim if you exercise 3 hours a day, every day.

That would depend on what needed brightening and whether or not you could see it all (hello knob and tube wiring). One problem I found is that nobody can tell Grandma her house isn’t as good as the neighbor’s house even if her house has 40 year old fixtures and the neighbor has just put $100k into their kitchen and bathrooms. There was one house I watched sit for a couple of years because it was priced as if appliances and cabinets appreciate over time.

I had assumed that Grandma house = estate sale. Lawyers aren’t as sentimental about pricing, if they need to settle an estate.
Many houses are priced at unrealistic prices. I’ve watched the same houses go on the market and go off the market, for years.

I’ve never been to an estate sale, but in my experience younger sellers are quicker to come to a market price because they generally need to be moving somewhere else for either work or to avoid moving the kids during the school year.

I know a number of couples who are split between towns or states. One spouse takes a new job, and the other spouse stays behind, usually with the children, to sell the house. Not fun. Some of the out-of-state spouses returned home when the new job ended. It’s very stressful.
