The Ethics of Squatting and Looting

I spent a good part of the weekend watching cable news on Haiti. I wanted them to find more trapped people so badly, that I got a little crazy. I didn't want to turn the channel, because I didn't want the diggers to give up. If I turned the channel, maybe they would run out of energy, too. Maybe the news reporters would stop covering the disaster. Maybe people would stop giving money. So, therefore, I had to keep watching Anderson Cooper and Sanjay Gupta, even if CNN was just broadcasting the same footage over and over.

May I just say that that Sanjay Gupta was incredible. He was actually keeping people alive, while he was reporting.

All reporters should have other skills, in addition to just covering the news. I want Geraldo operating a fork lift and Anderson hooking up an IV. Instead of just getting in the way of the people digging through the rocks to find their loved ones, maybe it would be nice they helped out, too.

Macaroni sent me an article from the Times, which argues that squatting and looting is entirely ethical, especially during these times of crisis.

Completely agree. If there are stores with bread and water on the shelves, it's entirely fair game right now.
