Bodies in the Building

In the Wire, two psychopathic gangsters killed off anyone who threatened the power of their boss and hid the bodies in deserted buildings. It took a long time for the cops to discover the bodies because there are just so many deserted buildings in Baltimore and because the cops weren't all that interested in finding out what happened to small time crooks.

Real life is worse than fiction.

Popup-1 A psychopath in Cleveland has been probably sexually molesting and certainly killing women in Cleveland. He preyed on women with drug problems, who were living off the streets, because he knew that nobody would look for them. He was right.

He hid the bodies around his own house — in the basement, in crawl spaces, in a bucket. He may have hidden more in deserted buildings nearby.

On one of the morning shows this morning, the family of one victim talks about how indifferent the police were to the disappearance of a female drug addict. Another neighbor told a similar story to the New York Times.

Pissed off.

  1. This reminds me of Dahmer. Remember how the Milwaukee police actually returned one of his victims to his house, after the kid had run off — naked and bloody? I believe that young man’s body was later found under a bed.
There was a sense with Dahmer that the victims were not taken seriously because they were gay. But there’s a side of me that thinks, is this also about the police being flat-out incompetent?

  2. The Dahmer analogy is an interesting one, Jen. Two of the three officers who returned one of Dahmer’s victims to him lost their jobs — but then appealed their termination and were reinstated. (The three said they’d believed Dahmer when he said that this 14-year-old Laotian boy was his 19-year-old lover and that they’d had a quarrel.) With back pay. And then were named officers of the year by the police union.
I belong to a union myself, but it’s hard for me to believe that lives were lost in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in order to protect the employment of bigots and incompetents.
