Spreadin’ Love

Education Week has an interactive map of where the stimulus money for education went. Hint — a big chunk just went to plug up budget deficits. Check out their Follow the Stimulus map.

This speech made me like Jennifer Aniston just a little bit.

From Louis Menand's essay on creative writing classes:

The workshop is a process, an unscripted performance space, a regime
for forcing people to do two things that are fundamentally contrary to
human nature: actually write stuff (as opposed to planning to write
stuff very, very soon), and then sit there while strangers tear it

  1. One of my best friends did an MFA in creative writing at Columbia. To make money during that time he also taught writing to young kids in Harlem, mostly African-American. He described them as being much like little samurai, ready to cut down anyone who questioned their honor. He reported that they were amazed and shocked to hear about the critique sessions for writing classes, with everyone telling you how bad you are, with them saying that they’d surely start a fight with people if they went through that. He reports that he certainly understood the feeling, and more than once wished to give it reality, too.
