Where is Kate Middleton?

Dudes, I’m on vacation. I’m at Cancun with my family enjoying unlimited beverages and sun. And I’m choosing to spend the next hour writing about Kate Middleton, rather than day drinking on the beach chair. It’s a crazy world indeed.
So, some backstory. How did I, a serious policy and family writer with roots in Northern Ireland, become interested in the royal family? Age-related insomnia. Yeah, I turned 53, the hormones went weird, and I couldn’t sleep, so I started reading gossip blogs at 3am. I’ve written about them here and there. The tag “royal mess” takes you to the old stuff.
The Internet is exploding with gossip about the health issues and conspiracy theories surrounding King Charles and Kate Middleton, Princess Catherine of Wales. Since my insomnia never quite went away, I’ve been following this story and leaning into information from the sources that are usually right. Here’s my take on events.

  1. Thank God you’ve finally addressed this. Last week I resorted to reading an entire Slate story on Kate but I was wishing instead there’d be an apt11d “Royals for Dummies” explanation instead. Your theory sounds very reasonable.

  2. I think a hysterectomy would be likely. Its recovery time aligns with the announced seclusion period. With any surgery, there is the chance of post-operative complications.

    I don’t care about the photo–whatever. I wish her a speedy recovery.

It would have been nice if William could rely on his brother for support during this time, but, not so much.

  3. The whole concept of ‘someone is evidentially sick – as in needing a hospital operation. Lets leave her alone to recover’ – seems to be entirely foreign to the modern click-bait headline media. Driven by journalists who need a story – any story – to justify their existence.

Notably, ‘Just Harry’ who has been rabid on the topic of the media hounding him – has been entirely silent on them hounding his sister-in-law.
Not that I think he needs to get involved (and any attempt to ‘reach out’ would probably be received poorly) – but a measured press release along the lines of “Princess Catherine has been in hospital for abdominal surgery. Like everyone else, she is entitled to keep her medical information private. Uninformed speculation harms both her and anyone else who believes it. Leave her alone to recover. There are plenty of other issues of interest to the public for the media to cover.”

  4. I get the desire to dive into something gossipy or just plain irrelevant to your day to day life. The last year for me has been following the internet rabbit hole on tornadoes and storm chasers. Lots of drama. I’ve also learned a lot and am glad to not live in Oklahoma where tornadoes can get horribly dangerous.

    1. I’ve never been in a big tornado myself, but I remember in 1980 when all the tornadoes hit Grand Island and the next time we visited my dad had to drive around and see which parts of his youth were flattened.

  5. Alexandra Petri’s column was a hoot — she turned to literature for answers about where Kate is, and the best one she got was “wuthering, on a height.”

Is it odd that people keep using her last name? I don’t remember Diana being discussed as Diana Spencer during her princesshood.

Anyway, monarchies should be abolished, but that’s up to the Brits. It’s not like the Protectorate was great either, and he tried to make that inheritable, too.

    1. lol. I’ll check out Petri’s article.

Yes, it’s weird that we call her Kate Middleton, esp since nobody close to her even calls her Kate. Her name is Catherine.

Yes, the Brits should make decisions about the monarchy. And they love them, so whatever.
