I Lost!

Hi, all! Just dropping in for a moment to give an update.

I spent six months running for a local office. Learned a lot, met some good people, and lost. I was disappointed on Tuesday night, for sure, but not hugely.

I’m excited to return to writing. As I learned, one can’t be a writer and hold political office at the same time. There’s always a danger that an innocent sentence could be twisted by Internet trolls and ridiculed on a local site. Also, I just didn’t have time. I worked 14 hour days, seven days a week for months on this campaign. I’m actually physically exhausted.

So, give me another day or two to recover with long walk/runs and shopping therapy. I’ll do something tomorrow.

Thanks for your patience!!

  1. I’m sorry that you lost–I think you are exactly the kind of smart, committed, knowledgeable person who should be on a school board. Where I live, it’s usually the folks who have risen through the school district foundation and done lots of fundraising for the schools who get elected–in other words, an old boy (but more women) network. Outsiders never win, alas. I imagine you were too well qualified. But I look forward to seeing more of your writing.

    1. That’s exactly what happened. Couldn’t beat the phone tree of the rich mom wine club! (I’m a little pissed because I just found out that they were defacing our campaign materials. Children.)

      1. They were likely jealous of how physically attractive you are. Hot & smart is hard for certain women to deal with.

    2. We do elect wonks like you here. What happens next is most end up realizing their wonky tools figured less in managing the complexity of school and that their goals were personally more specific than the work needed.

Mean Girls from middle schools seems like a bad school board and tearing down flyers is pathetic. I hope that doesn’t too heavily impact any work they do.

  2. I’m sorry that you lost – it’s tough to invest so much time and energy into putting yourslef out there, and not get over the line.

FWIW, I think that your local district will be the poorer without your representation – someone so switched on to the issues, willing to research and learn, and come up with solutions and options – is pure gold.

  3. So sorry to hear this—you’re the sort of informed, competent candidate I wish we had on our school board down here in Maryland—but you clearly ran a clean, serious, honest, and principled campaign. I know how rarely that flies in my home state of N.J., but I hope you have no regrets about trying to do the right thing.

  4. As a former physics teacher friend of mine used to say, a negative result is also a result! You put yourself out there. It didn’t work, but you did your best. Never say never–there may be a better opportunity for you someday.
