Home: Master Bathroom Renovations

Renovating two bathrooms was not on my bingo card for 2023.

A backyard hot tub was on my bingo card. But you can’t always get what you want. Especially, when the rotting wood and shitty plumbing becomes a crisis that couldn’t be ignored. Later, when the floor was ripped up, we realized that we were in danger of the shower falling through the floor and into the basement.

So, 2023 was the year of two bathrooms and zero hot tubs. As it turns out, I love having a shower that reliably produces hot water and is just beautiful. Here’s the masterbath:

  1. That looks nice. We’re still waiting for the vanity, but next month we’re probably going to have no shower for a week while our only full bath is renovated.

  2. It’s a really beautiful vanity. Is it hard to clean on the sides? I have tools that would probably slide down nicely, but… I’m asking as my sister is looking at something similar for her upstairs bath and that’s my caveat.

  3. I was at home depot the other day and was impressed at the variety of lighting fixtures and vanities and kitchens. My current house is circa 1950 & renovated in 1990 or so and all the cabinets/etc are custom, but I think in newer houses they are designing to fit the mass produced cabinets. The cost is so much less and, I think, the quality can sometimes be better unless you are building very high end luxury.

We have a second place, now, finished in 2023, not custom designed, and I have now seen what look to be the same cabinets in the kitchen in multiple design blogs; I’m presuming they are some mass produced item.

  4. It’s fascinating to see the steps and to see the final product. I’d have said the previous version was fine, but the renovated version is so much nicer. I have friends who seem like they are constantly renovating, and I think that’s what they get out of it, spaces that look like your fresh new bath all the time.

(But, it’s not how I would want to spend my time)

  5. Single sink… this is not for a couple who are both needing to getthehell outta the house at the same time in the morning! Looks nice!

  6. Looks really great! And Dave, if you’re used to two sinks, you definitely aren’t living in a post-war bungalow like me…we have one sink, one main bathroom for 3 adults (my oldest turned 18!) and a 12-year old. It’s all about timing and cooperation.

    1. I’ve never had a bathroom with 2 sinks. I’ve never lived in a house with 2 full bathrooms! In my entire life except maybe in dorms.

    2. Jenn, in my increasingly shi-shi town there are listings with master bedrooms with TWO attached baths… so, back to single sinks, yes?
I do feel left behind, sometimes…
