Like Amanda Hess, I did not seek out information about the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard defamation trial. But it was impossible to avoid those viral videos that just showed up in my Facebook and Instagram feeds. I didn’t seek out the videos, but I also didn’t avoid watching them either.
So, what did I think? They are both pathetic rich, drunk losers. Depp probably isn’t a raging wife beater, but he’s pathetic just the same. I haven’t quite recovered from the poop on the bed story.
What did you think? Team Depp? Team Heard?
2 deeply unpleasant people in a toxic relationship.
Both at fault.
Really, I didn’t need or want to know any of the details reported with such relish by the media.
IMO – Heard should have just walked away – rather than trying to monetize/gain woke cred from the situation.
She’s lost a lot more than Depp – and should have foreseen this from the outset. Though, perhaps she’s A) not very bright and/or B) truly believed that the Wokesters had the capacity to protect her from all consequences of her actions.
Finally, I think this says more about our society ‘glorifying’ popular culture icons, and then turning on them, when they have feet of clay. FWIW, I think both behaviours are equally reprehensible.
I don’t expect actors to set a high bar for ethical behaviour. They’re hired because they act well (or at least we hope they do!), not because they’re some kind of saint.
I think that it’s perfectly possible to admire someone’s acting skills, while *not* admiring their personal life or choices. If you limit the films you watch to only those with actors whose politics/ethics/woke continuum you agree with, you’ll have a very small selection to choose from.
I think the whole cancel culture thing is deeply wrong.

The real villain is the ACLU who combined hubris with mission creep. Otherwise, we weren’t there. But it’s clear these two ppl had chemistry together, only it was nuclear waste level chemistry

ACLU is fucked. Depp probably isn’t a raging wife beater,
People keep saying this, but for the life of me can’t understand why. Michelle Goldberg pretty much summarizes my take on this which is that it is pretty plausible that Depp *did* assault Heard on at least one and probably several occasions, for which the jury found that he defamed Heard to the tune of $2M. Once this finding was reached, I find it incomprehensible that Heard could be found guilty of defaming Depp for saying he was a domestic abuser, which, he plausibly was (otherwise he could not have been guilty of defaming Heard). It is a travesty that he is taking home a single cent from this.
And this.

This is just crazy talk. How could Heard “walk away” when she was the one initially sued? Her suit was a countersuit.
This seems to me ultimately to be a backlash against men being held accountable for abusing women, sexually and otherwise, which has been happening to a much greater degree over the past few years. But this accountability is a *good* thing, not a bad thing. What I don’t understand is why so many women were so stridently defending Depp. This article strikes me as as plausible an explanation as any but I don’t want to believe it because it would mean the Victorians were right about the temperment and agency of women and I don’t want to live in that world.

Totally agree, Jay. And basically, the message from this stupid trial with this stupid jury and stupid people hating on AH (including my sisters!) is that people are not allowed to talk about the abuse that has happened to them. Even the finding that Depp defamed Heard suggests that Hey, if you’re abused, then STFU about it.
