Should a PhD grad student date someone without a college degree? (Thanks, Amy P.)

Yes, I’m googling recipes for celery root this morning. Damn, it’s ugly.

Whooping cough. Thanks, anti-vaxxers!

  1. Oh, hell, Gay of Thrones is damn funny. “Some people can’t even read them.” Thanks for spreading the love, Laura!

    1. OK–read the story. It sounds like she was working fast enough that it might not have been possible to detect her.

This one makes the people who just do Munchausen by Internet without any real life faking look way better.

  2. Bonus story for NYT-opinion-page-haters:

Why Nicholas Kristof keeps getting taken advantage of with fake sob stories:

““I’m sometimes embarrassed by how clinical I can become when I’m out reporting,” Kristof replied. When he arrived in Sudan that weekend, he said, “I’ll be out to find the most compelling story that I can within a limited time.” He predicted that he’d hear “some heartrending story about some 30-year-old man. And, frankly, I will know that I can do better as an anecdote. I want to get American readers to care about my story, and if I have some middle-aged man in my lede, they’re going to tune out.” Instead, Kristof would hold out for a more compelling subject, like “some 9-year-old girl with soulful eyes.””

    1. You rang?

Though I haven’t read NYT columnists with any regularity since the first GWB administration. The op-eds can be a different matter but the regulars are mostly a waste of one of the best platforms in global media.

  3. It’s amazing, the question of whether dating the non-PhD would sabotage your career. The truth is, it *helps* your career. It’s the selective mating between PhDs that kills careers. One person often loses out to the two body problem.

No risk of that here. Losers are completely portable.

    1. Hee!

I thing the Letter Writer would have a different view if she knew more people at a slightly more advanced state in their careers.

I know a number of scientists here, and only one dual scientist couple. And she didn’t get tenure at the college and he probably did and they have a kid who is happily settled in school…What do you do then?
