The news cycle for the past 48-hours has been Christie-Time. I had a long list of boring chores yesterday morning, so I flipped on the TV in the next room, listened to the Christie’s press conference and checked items off my list. I installed a new printer, printed out labels for the holiday cards, took care of paperwork for the kids, wrote a holiday newsletter, purged e-mail, and still had time to spare. The “Poor Me” press conference went on and on.
Dave Weigel tweeted, “Did Christie accidentally fire the staffer who tells him when to end a press conference?”
Christie was remarkably on point for the whole time. He never deviated from his talking points, which were sad, humiliated, devastated, and not my fault. I think the big winner of the day was Chris Christie, because of the Kardashian principle, ie there is no such thing as bad publicity.
The new jobs report has broken giving pundits something new to talk about.

Maybe he has a future as a talk show host, or as governor of New Jersey. I don’t see him getting the Republican nomination, nor winning the presidency.
Why? Because Americans don’t do mean, and his actions were mean in every sense–petty, vindictive, selfish, and intended to hurt. He hurt everyone else for spite, and his staff were ok with this.
I see people saying, “oh, this is small potatoes, it will blow over,” etc. This is willful ignorance, perhaps because they don’t want to garner ill will from a politician who has a demonstrated track record of holding grudges.
Unlike other political scandals, voters understand traffic jams. They understand bad character. As I’ve driven through various states, only New Jersey has traffic cones which are weathered in place. Why are New Jersey residents ok with this? New Jersey is not the rest of the country. There has only ever been one president from New Jersey, and I’m certain Christie will not make it two.

Unless somebody finds evidence of him giving a direct order, I don’t think this will hurt Christie nearly as much as his being not far-right enough to win a primary. But I don’t think he can win a primary.

Someone in my class yesterday suggested that Christie and Giuliani might be a ticket and I said Oh, no way. No way do Repubs vote for a ticket with 2 Northeasterners. Then again, whoever thought a Clinton/Gore ticket would work?
(Btw, we were talking about social media and politics, and this came up because I made a comment about how I bet Bridget Kelly wishes she had used Snapchat.)

No. Won’t work.
Ronald Reagan was the oldest president ever at his inauguration, at 69. No president older than 69 has ever been elected to a first term in office.
For the last 20 years, no president older than 55 has been elected to office.
I doubt the country as a whole would elect two Northeasterners, as the US population has been shifting South and West for decades.
John F. Kennedy was the last president from the Northeast.
