  1. I didn’t realize until today that there is a difference between a turnip (“white turnip”) and a rutabaga (“yellow turnip”). In either case, both are vegetables that inspired me as a child to desire gainful employment as an adult so I would never, ever have to eat them.

    My sushi dinner tastes even more delicious after seeing this post.

  2. My MIL taught me to combine mashed rutabagas with mashed potatoes for 1) a more interesting flavor; and 2) a way to get the kids to eat them. Plus, more fiber/fewer net carbs. Husband calls it rutatoes when prepared that way.

  3. We’ve been experimenting with Paleo type food, and were given a wonderful recipe that basically involves grating turnip and treating it like hash browns for your Saturday/Sunday brunch. First time I’ve ever seen people gobble up turnips. Go root vegetables! (I put a couple of rutabagas into a crock pot Irish stew the other evening and they were also gobbled up — by people who apparently didn’t notice that they weren’t potatoes. YMMV.)

  4. We love the turnip-potato cake thing which we make with either (Martha Stewart recipe) but our other secret for eating them is a half-rutabaga, half-carrot mash with butter and salt. Yummy.

  5. I was the weird kid who liked rutabagas more than potatoes. Along with turnips and parsnips, they were a staple winter food.
