Tuesday Combo Blog Post

Last night, at around 2:30am, I awoke to Steve stomping around the room, pounding on the walls, and hollering at a scritching sound coming from the ceiling. There’s a critter in the small space between the attic and the ceiling in our bedroom. It was burying a nut or making a nest or something horrible up there. But as loud as it was, Steve’s stomping was louder. This went on for an hour or so before Steve decamped to the living room sofa leaving me alone with the scritching critter and his nut. I didn’t mind. I went back to sleep.

Thanks to Steve, I’m really tired today. (Yes, he’s taking all the blame.) I don’t have the brain capacity to write several blog posts with clear and coherent arguments right now. So, you’re going to get a fried rice of a blog post – a little of this and a little of that.

Everybody has linked to this frightening Vows article in the New York Times, but in case you missed it, here’s your moment of hatred for the day.

I interviewed some people  this morning for an article that I’m writing about Post-PhD careers. One of my interviewees (an old friend) who has a PhD from NYU in Ancient History and is now a telemarketer said that she has given up on her own career path. That wasn’t a concern of hers anymore. Now, she just worried about her kids’ futures. If you aren’t picking up on middle class parenting panic, then you live in a cave.

Got an e-mail from the high school today warning all parents about the DANGER HOUR. This is the hour before school functions when kids are power drinking grain alcohol in the parking lot before school functions. The e-mail said that kids who arrived intoxicated would be immediately arrested by police.

NPR had an interview with Amanda Ripley about her sports article in the Atlantic. I liked the interview more than her article. She pointed out that only 2% of college students get sports scholarships. I love knowing that statistic.

  1. Well yes I’m panicking. On the other hand, tough times and real limits may save them from thinking they can be yoga instructors! dave.s.

  2. You might want to consult a wildlife rehabilitator before taking lethal measures with the critter(s).

In our old neighborhood, the college managed to safely remove a bunch of baby raccoons from an attic (mom was AWOL) and send them to a rehabilitator.

Can they do that, assuming the kids fall into the category of “drunk but not drunk and orderly”? The crime was always minor in possession, not minor who used to be in possession but already drank it.

  4. I’m not sure about the focus of your post=PhDs article, but there is a robust alt career PhD community online. Both on The Chronicle website as well as Versatile PhD and other similar sites. I’m doing a non-faculty career in academia that I love. Not sure if this is at all relevant (or news) to you–probably not, but wanted to mention it since it is a topic I feel strongly about…alt careers for PhDers in and outside of the academy…
