Are Cell Phones Causing Breast Cancer?

ImageMy Facebook peeps are discussing some recent articles in the local press about cell phones causing breast cancer in young girls.

I guess you can buy bras with pockets for your cell phone. Look uncomfortable to me.

Is this a real thing?

  1. I kind of doubt it. Didn’t the brain cancer thing hit the news and then disappear? Or maybe that just went away because nobody holds a cell phone to their ear anymore.

  2. Who the hell keeps their phone in their bra? I guess if there is something about cell phones that causes cancer having one pressed next to you for hours on end would be risky. More so than having it next to your head just during phone calls since most people aren’t talking on the phone all day (or, if you’re like me, ever).

Is this part of the the supposed sensitivity people have to wireless signals? In the late 90’s and early 00’s I worked in a group home for adults with developmental disabilities and the wife of the owner of the company decided she had multiple chemical sensitivity and banned the use of all air fresheners. Which was all fine and good for her but it sucked for all of us actually working in the homes hanging out with adults in diapers.

  3. Who the hell keeps their phone in their bra?

From what I’ve seen, it tends to happen in cases where the volume of the phone is small relative to the volume of the bra.

  4. Apparently there’s a patent suit against the Pacific Northwest company behind the “Joey Bra”. Watching the founder use the bra-pocket, I think the correlation goes in the reverse: the phone pocket seems to work for women for whom the phone is large in comparison to the bra.
I personally am a fan of dresses with pockets, which is actually easier than having pockets on jeans (at lest for women, in which the size of the phone is big in relation to the size of the jeans). I also wish purse belts would become vogue. I’ve seen a few in the stores recently — small pockets on a belt that could hold a phone & credit cards & a key.

Also, on Batman. I don’t think those will take-off widely. I know plenty of men who wear their phone on their belt, but I can’t imagine ever doing so.

  5. On a slightly related note I’m pleased that the Supreme Court ruled that genes in thrir naturally occurring forma cannot be patented.

  6. I’m very skeptical of the cancer claim (that it’s on a local news site in Baltimore doesn’t make me less skeptical- probably the opposite) but I see _lots_ of women at the gym who have i-pods or, perhaps, i-phones, (I don’t bother to check) tucked into the breast-holding part of their work-out gear, and have heard of “boob sweat” ruining someone’s phone before, so I suppose people might do such things outside of the gym, too.
