Cutting the Federal Education. Who Will Get Hurt the Most?

As part of the latest battle in Washington over the budget, the federal budget for education is slated to get hit with a 5.1% cut. Who's going to feel the pain? Special ed kids and the poor.

It's somewhat confusing, but funds for education actually come from multiple agencies, not just the Department of Education. Head Start, for example, is run out of HHS. The school lunch program comes from the Department of Agriculture. Regardless of where the money comes from, almost all education money at the federal level goes to poor kids and disabled kids.

Because of the sequestor, these agencies are getting hit with a major cut. And the pain is going to be felt in two volunerable communities – the poor and the disabled.

Nice job, Washington.

More at the Atlantic from me.

  1. Do you talk about impacts in the future tense because they won’t come into play until the next school year? I ask because I think there are definitely people out there who are thinking there isn’t any impact because they aren’t seeing programs being cut right now in their schools.
