What is Romantic?

On the way back from the pediatrician’s office yesterday, Jonah and I stopped by the drug store to pick up a Valentine’s Day card for Steve. Jonah picked up one that played a Justin Beiber song, “Will You Be My Boyfriend.” Later, we signed it and set the house up for a Valentine’s Day dinner.

As Jonah helped me shake out the red table cloth and light the candles, Ian came into the room and asked, “What does romantic mean?”

“Sweetie, romantic means the feeling when you love somebody a lot.”

Steve walked in with take out Thai food and carnations from the supermarket. Usually, we go out to eat for Valentine’s Day, but we’re watching the pennies these days. Jonah and I have been fighting off a bug, so I wasn’t up for making a fancy meal.

As Steve opened up the brown bag with little containers of green curry and rice, Ian said, “Wait! I need a tie! I need a mustache.”

He ran upstairs and came down with a tie for Steve to put on him. Then he raced back up again and came back with a mustache that he had cut out of paper and scotch taped to his upper lip.

After Jonah set the table, Ian came around and took our orders for dinner. He brought me my glass of wine. He served the white rice. He even put on an accent as he took our order.

This is what romance is.

  1. You made me cry.
My guy brought home tulips (everything else makes him and kiddo sneeze) and a heart shaped creme brulee (which the kids then proceeded to eat). That was romantic, too, especially that he found a vase for the tulips.
A 17 year old I know asked her parents to dress up, decorated the table with rose petals and candles, and made dinner for her parents. She’s leaving for college next year, and this morning, I was thinking that it is a “launch” to have raised a daughter who treats the people she loves (and who love her) well.

  2. Maybe I should see if I can’t get him to switch to a hand rolled smoke to replace the commercial cigarette he lights after mass.
