Hurricane Watching

Like everybody else, I'm keeping a close eye on Isaac. How will it affect the Republican convention?

The national political science conference, which I attended religiously for years, will be at New Orleans next week. My twitterfeed is full of political scientists in full scale, freak out mode. Truthfully, APSA is a miserable affair, and I think that everybody is secretly hoping that it gets cancelled. (Dudes, party at my place!)

Hopefully, this hurricane will be minor, not for the sake of some tweedy academics, but for the people of New Orleans.

  1. I was once in a convention in Miami/Miami Beach during a tropical storm. It was kind of fun (the storm ended by the end of the convention), traveling in buses in foot deep water from Miami, watching serious storming outside the high rise hotel I was in.
But that was all before the tragedy of Katrina. I think now people freak out about the worst case scenario experienced then, rather than the milder versions that are more common.

  2. I’ve only been to one APSA. It wasn’t that bad, partially because it was in New York and I’d never been as an adult.
