  1. Washingtonian magazine once responded to criticisms of cover photos almost exactly like that: they sell about half again as many magazines from grocery store news stands as their covers with photos of swell houses in the leafy burbs, or photos of subway trains to support an article about our infrastructure problems, or some Marcus Welby type to support their regular ‘best doctors’ issue, etc.
When you think about it, it’s kind of baffling. Everybody with Internet is about three clicks away from, well, gynecological porn. The kind of stuff a very few guys in my junior high had stolen from their fathers, and it was sort of special to be invited over to see it. So you’d think guys who like that sort of stuff would have had their fill. But it still sells magazines.

What if the answer to the mystery is that it’s women who are the primary grocery store buyers? If you look at the standard women’s magazines like Glamour or Cosmo, they almost invariably have a smoking hot woman on the cover. This model seems to have wandered over from one of those photo shoots and put on ugly glasses and a cheap tank top.

  3. I think those ugly glasses are in this year, from the floor space at Claires’s devoted to “nerd glasses”
