A friend of mine recently noted on her Facebook page that she thought it was better for her to self-publish her book, rather than go with a traditional publisher. I guess she's not the only one. Penelope Trunk's blog post about traditional publishing v. self-publishing is a must read.

I’m surprised Trunk was so surprised that her publisher wasn’t going to do much marketing for her…It’s been several years since even the Big 6 did much of anything for publicity.
I’m also surprised she was allowed to keep the advance. Typically, if you break the contract, you have to give it back.
