Anne Marie Slaughter's Atlantic cover story, "Why Women Still Can't Have It All" made repeated references to Sheryl Sandberg. Sandberg hasn't responded yet, but everyone is waiting.
I'm re-reading an old Ken Auletta profile of Sandberg this morning.
And just a side note. Slaughter's story has been liked on Facebook 141K times making it the most popular story for the year at the Atlantic.

So, Sheryl Sandburg’s kids are younger. One of the things I learned was that my kids could be more effectively taken care of by others when they were younger. As they got older, their needs and wants got more complex, psychologically, logistically. This was especially true if they/we were aiminng for the high achievement childhood that involves select sports, tryouts, musical instruments, high performance schools, . . . .
Sandburg also has the benefit of nearly infinite resources, which Slaughter didn’t have as a government employee and doesn’t have even if there are a number of years with 1M salaries in their background.
There’s a profile on the web of Linden Rhoads (think a version of Sandburg, who stepped off to flexibility). She had 24 hour personal assistance (like the high priced nannies we talked about a few months ago), but calling it a household manager.
Prediction: Sandburg will step away from running FB into a more flexible position as her children reach her Tweens, like the Gates did.

ps: I think this comparison is interesting because I like thinking about how things are possible. I think a lot of people engage in fantastical thinking about how they could make things work, if tey had more money, or school was longer hours, or they could work from home. I like seeing how people actually balance their lives instead of how they think they would.

Interesting. I wonder if and how boss Zuckerberg’s own background will play out in the FB corporate culture. Born 1984, Z attended boarding school, had a SAHM who went back to psychiatry for a year post-kid then quit because she “did not want her kids turning out like her patients;” and dad’s dental practice was attached to the family house. Apparently, the Z kids spent a lot of time at dad’s office.
