Spreadin’ Love 489

In my photography class today, we watched a video about Jay Maisel. Check out his house – the largest, single residence in Manhattan. If you take his $5,000 workshop, you'll not only be a better photographer. You'll also be a better human being! Or you could watch this video

Lots of people are talking about this proposal for a 4 year PhD in humanities program.

Thomas Friedman's MOOC op-ed is the most e-mailed today.

Mario Batali takes the Food Stamp Challenge

  1. Love the juxtaposition of the zillion dollar house AND the $5,000 photo class. One helping to pay for the other?
You just need to get out and take photos – unfortunately there are no shortcuts.

  2. In the the UK a standard PhD program is three years long. A lot of people, however, get a one year extension for a total of four years after the MA. I did my PhD at SOAS (University of London) in two years after completing a one year MA at the same institution. Personally, I think four years maximum is a good policy. If you take ten years to do a PhD that shows that you are five times as slow as some one who takes two years.

  3. I’m not that impressed by Batali’s Food Stamp Challenge, which would be $124 for a week’s food for his family (unless his boys are really late teens, but that’s always hard). It would be very hard to do $31 for a week for one person and it would be very hard to do $124/week for an extended period. But one week shouldn’t be very hard.
