Old New York

New York City just released a database of 870,000 pictures of old New York City. This picture is of Bleeker Street, near Our Lady of Pompeii in 1937. A friend's grandmother lived on the block and taught at Our Lady of Pompeii at that time. I wonder if Nonna knows those people.

Those pictures are remarkable because the bones of New York City were built at that time. The only thing that has changed are the signs in front of the stores. NYC today is NYC in 1937.

  1. I was looking at old pictures of my neighborhood just this week. I was struck by how much had changed since those shots (80 to 90 years old). Outside of the building in which I am currently sitting and a couple of bridges, it wasn’t recognizable. Even much of the topography has been changed and there were intersections that no longer exist and whole bridges buried as they filled the valley. My house sits, along with many others, on the grounds of some guy’s suburban estate.
