I'm obsessed with paint right now, but I think that I'm sick of bright colors. I might paint our new house entirely off white, like this house

  1. The inside of our house is entirely off white except for one bathroom which is white-white. I’m getting sick of it but have been too tired to paint.

  2. Even our ceilings are off white, which I regret, but at the time we painted it was much easier to not have to change paint colors.

  3. Re Wendi Deng: It was interesting to read about how she ended up in the USA. She had a long-term affair with the man who, with his wife, brought her over from China. She then married the guy, got a green card, then had an affair with someone else. She sounds like a lovely woman.

  4. Big fan of OC-130 Cloud White. It’s a great backdrop for artwork. And since our house is in Vancouver (PNW), it’s a good colour with the grey skies.

  5. I did my downstairs in white and am now really bored with it. It doesn’t highlight my furniture or art. White works better on the west coast, imo, where the intensity of the light is literally reflected back at you, changing the color of the walls depending on the time of day. On the east coast, white is just … well, white.

I bet white is a bit different in Florida. I also wonder if house construction doesn’t make a big difference. A lot of mid-century and later Western homes really go for the indoor-outdoor thing (see Sunset Magazine, etc.), while a lot of NE homes are from an earlier era, where the home is a sort of fortress with little connection to the outside world. Laura’s new split-level may have a strong enough indoor-outdoor connection that the white will be reflecting the outdoors, rather than creating a claustrophobic hospital-like atmosphere.
The Scandinavian design blogs are full of white rooms with a bit of color here and there. It looks great in the photos, but I wonder if it wouldn’t be a bit boring to actually live with (as well as making everything look a little bit dirty all the time).

  7. All I could think when I looked at that house was “no children”…no way those walls would stay white with a couple of children in the house…K

  8. My Irish-Italian SIL (a longtime devotee of Martha Stewart) would say to just keep painting it as needed. And she’d do it, too.
