Spreadin’ Love 539

Map of the World's Despots. I love a good map.

Round-Up causes birth defects. And they've know about it since 1980. And they've been creating genetically altered Round-Up resistant crops. Ugh.

 The dark-side of Trader Joe's.

Now that I've thoroughly depressed you, I'm going to look for something uplifting or silly.

  1. I love a good map too, but I’d definitely have put more dictators on that one. Aliev of Azerbaijan for sure, Castro frere as well. People’s Republic of China is still a dictatorship of the proletariat, even if it looks a lot like rule by the Marxist mandarinate. I think Turkmenistan only got left out because Turkmenbashi bit the dust a while back and no one can remember who runs the joint now. Isn’t Laos also still Communist? In a month, the mapmakers will have to split out Southern Sudan, which is likely to be non-dictatorial, at least at the start.
Anyway, great map, and w00t, lots less dictatorships than when I started paying attention to international politics. The 21st century is kinda neat that way.

  2. China was a peasant-based communism, not a proletariat (industrial worker) one. And somehow I don’t get the impression that most peasants, or prols, are getting the perks we associate with despotism. (Income inequality is way up, for one.)
