Spreadin’ Love 522

I painted our bathroom this morning a lovely shade of grey. I need a quick lunch and then I have to tackle the rest of the mess around here. The real estate lady is showing up tonight. The real estate lady reminds me a lot of Joey's agent, Estelle, from Friends, so I'm a little afraid of her.

A cool interactive map looking at the percentage of the population with a BA across the country and over time. (Thanks Julie G)

  1. That interactive map is very interesting. Even though I’m in higher ed, and have spent most of my career at a comprehensive institution (geared towards first generation college students) I was surprised by the low national average of college degrees.
The gadget article says that paper cookbooks will give way to digital ones, highlighting a Martha Stewart app. I do love epicurious, but I can’t see cooking around any electronic device. My paper cookbooks are too covered with splatters and stains. Am I really out of step? I’m curious about how people use e-cookbooks (me, I print epicurious recipes when I need them, and still use my favorite paper cookbooks regularly).

  2. My wife has taken many things from on-line recipe sharing sites, (and once in a while from on-line cookbooks, but much less often) but what she usually does is print out the recipe she’s interested in and then save it in a folder later if it’s any good.

  3. Usual procedure here is to print out recipe, cook stuff, toss out spattered recipe, and print out second copy for a recipe folder if it was good, usually with handwritten notes about possible variations and how it turned out last time. My husband has taped several beloved recipes to the back side of a cupboard door where they can easily be read, but stay out of the mess. I like the idea of some sort of dedicated electronic thingy for storing and displaying recipes, but it would be overkill for our household.

  4. I’m wondering if the guy who wrote the “gadgets” article works for Verizon or ATT. Doing all of that stuff with only a smartphone means being in thrall to your carrier forever.
