1. A new generation of suckers, maybe. We know several of these natural, idealistic couples in Wisconsin. (My husband & I, although dabbling in farming, are too old to be young farmers.) Joel Saletin notwithstanding, there is no way to make the economics work. MAYBE if you have off-farm income (so you can have health insurance) and you inherit the land.

2. The dude is holding a chicken and wearing a tweed cap. His economics work just fine because he’s growing pot.

3. In all fairness, I should probably consider that photographers often try to make people look interesting and usually don’t do so well.
