I find something compelling about parenting discussions that pretend to be anthropologicish. Before our first daughter was born, I went back and re-read the four “Parenting Ways” chapters of David Hackett Fischer’s Albion’s Seed, and I lap up David Brooks’s “Organization Kid” articles. Perhaps the cultural framework makes the parenting practices more distant, less universal-and-thus-threatening.
