From the Economix:
More women are obtaining Ph.D.’s in science than ever before, but those women — largely because of pressures from having a family — are far more likely than their male counterparts to “leak” out of the research science pipeline before obtaining tenure at a college or university.

Because at research-intensive or wannabe universities, spending time on a family, or even being in a situation where you are seen as spending time on a family, is seen as insufficiently committed to your research when you’re a woman.
For all that academics tout their flexible schedules, when you’re expected to be an entrepreneur (what else do you call someone who spends most of her time chasing grants and then administering them while also producing the research goods and marketing them through conferences and the like?), anything you do outside of the academic world isn’t contributing to that bottom line and the theoretical man who could be occupying your spot wouldn’t have those distractions of motherhood to reduce his effectiveness.
Gosh, I’m feeling cranky tonight!
