Spreadin’ Love 500

I promise to tackle the FCC and net neutrality next week.

The notion that we're a nation in decline came up in the comment section this week. Conor Friederdorf at Andrew Sullivan adds more to that discussion.

Your kid's class size is going to increase in the next few years. I'm reading a lot of posts like this one.

I can't wait to see True Grit.

Appalled that Christina Hendricks can't get a designer to loan her a dress for the red carpet.

Dr. Drew thinks Angelina is still a heroin addict.

  1. Gee, I was going to ask why anyone would care what Paul Kennedy thought about anything. Hasn’t he been peddling declinism since the mid-1980s?
And as one who was born in a nation where racial and sexual discrimination was mostly legal, where the executive could get us into a 10-plus year war in Southeast Asia without any real Congressional oversight, where one president was assassinated and another impeached, etc., I find it hard to take Friedersdorf’s issues seriously.

Forgive me, Matt, but when domestic crap piles up like this, my eye strays to Perez Hilton and VH1.

  3. If it’s a matter of relative decline, we’ve been declining since about August 1945 when we stopped blowing the shit out of other developed nations and began rebuilding — not, as the time-honored approach had been, by requiring the vanquished to pay the costs of the conqueror, but by participating actively in their reconstruction. We’ve hastened our own relative decline by assisting (as possible) the rise of China and India out or wretched poverty; we’ve hastened our relative decline by aiding and abetting a world where Mexico and South Korea (to name only two) are OECD countries. And on and on.
As y81 notes, we live in a better America and a better world than we did 25 or 50 years ago. If this is decline, more please.
