That is a good piece in the Economist. It doesn’t tell you much that hasn’t been said in the Chronicle of Higher Education and various academic blogs, but it’s good to see in a mainstream print publication.
What would be really useful would be an overview like this but with hard numbers and citations. (What a great project for someone with research skills, background knowledge of the academic market and some spare time!) Then I could send the documented piece to my niece, my god-daughter and the other misguided young people I know who are considering graduate school.
