I'm at the American Political Science Association meeting in Washington, DC today. I never submitted a proposal for a paper. I suddenly realized that working for free is for suckers. (No, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.) Without the horror of a paper hanging over my head, I have had the best summer ever. No stress. I'm going to the conference just for the fun of it. Steve and the boys are going, too, and I will probably spend more time at bars with friends and with the kids at museums than I'll spend listening to papers.
Conference shoes are super important. I just bought a pair of Naturalizer Becca Pumps in a tailored two-toned color. I usually hate breaking in new shoes at this conference, because it means a box of bandaids. But these shoes look super comfortable, and I don't plan on being that ambitious about catching every panel.

Years ago, I saw Phil Converse wearing a similar shoe at APSA.

Glad I’m not the only one! I don’t know why I do this to myself either, but for some reason I always think it’s a great idea to go buy new cute shoes for a conference. I always end up in the bathroom, covering my feet with bandaids and cursing to myself! Then, at the first chance I get, I’ll go back to the hotel and put on my boring, not cute, not new shoes just so I can make it through the rest of the day. Maybe I’ll have to hunt these shoes down…or better yet, break shoes in before the conference!

There is something to be said for being a tourist at a conference. But recognize you’re being a tourist.

So sorry I didn’t manage to see you! We had a pretty good panel on food politics, I had some good sushi that night, and I managed to get back home to enjoy the weekend without Earl interfering.

I was there at the panel, RC. Sitting right next to Toni. I had to zip out right afterwards and couldn’t introduce myself, because I had a 6:00 appointment with some bloggers. Nice job pulling those papers together, btw.

How’d the shoes hold up?

Regular reader, sometime commenter. I was sitting at lunch by the Marriott on Friday, and you and your family walked by. I felt like I had seen a star – that’s Laura from 11D. Pretty funny. I would have stalked you into the pizza place except I was having lunch with some folks in my area – not at my institution, just getting to know them. I think they would have thought I was really strange if I rushed off, so alas, I did not get the chance to introduce myself. Glad to hear you had a good time.

Yes, I did have a good time, Shannon. Lots of old friends and blogging meetups. Single malt scotch was involved.
Gee, I hope I wasn’t picking my nose or something embarrassing. We had just pulled into DC, and I was still discombobulated. Too bad that we didn’t have a chance to meet. Next time.
