After reading this review of 80s Time Machine, Steve and I got into a big discussion of 80's movies. Steve's sense of fashion was arrested in 1983. If Steve had his way, he would wear his skinny, keyboard tie to work every day.
Steve's movie star crush from the 80s was Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club dressed in black with the thick black eyeliner. He said that Goth Girls are cool. My crush was Andrew McCarthy in St. Elmo's Fire with his long wool coat and tortured artist vibe. In second place came John Cusack in the Sure Thing.
80's film crush, anyone?

Ione Skye. And not just because of all the crossword puzzle clues.
I’m with ya on Andrew McCarthy. Also liked him in Pretty in Pink. 🙂
In a new missionary apartment in South Korea which I moved into just before the end of my time there, in 1990, I discovered a whole suit, left behind years before, cut in a beautiful 80s style, complete with some skinny leather ties. The suit was so old I couldn’t get much use out of it, but I loved those ties. I wore them proudly for years. I did into paisley or power ties, and now of course the big knots are back. Give me skinny ties any day.
I’ve never had movie star crushes. I don’t know why. But I did think Elisabeth Shue in Adventures in Babysitting was gorgeous. I was depressed to next find her slumming with that creepy smile-machine Tom Cruise in the miserable Cocktail.
I am, of course, all about 80s music videos.
How about the entire cast of The Outsiders? Wow.
Nicolas Cage in Valley Girl. Oh yes. I also liked Andrew McCarthy in SEF, which I saw twice. *embarrassed*
Rupert Everett in Another Country. Mel Gibson (pre-repulsiveness) in The Year of Living Dangerously. Cary Elwes in The Princess Bride. And yeah, Cusack just a little bit. I didn’t nourish my crush for the next 20 years though.
Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High – bikini scene. Winona Ryder in anything.
Ooh, Marya, good one with Mel in Year of Living Dangerously. I had forgotten.
This is really early 80s, but I must have seen Officer and a Gentleman at least 15 times. (Blush.)
Cusack. Say Anything.
Can’t believe I’m the first.
