The New Republic is continuing the debate about teacher quality

I've had a lingering sore throat for the past week. A day on the sofa with a good book might the only way to get rid of it. This review of Zadie Smith's books reminded me that I have a unread copy of On Beauty
on the bookshelf.

Pioneer Woman has a book and a movie deal.

  1. I’m just hoping that the water-in-ear sensation is the result of many altitude changes today, as there wasn’t a swimming pool involved, and there’s no chance of a sofa day for getting rid of it.

  2. I seem to get water-in-ear sensations whenever my sinus passages are acting up, be it for allergies or otherwise. (Doctor told me it wasn’t that odd, but who knows?) For me, Mucinex and/or decongestants clear that up pretty well.

  3. Am presently trying the five-year-old Sudafed. Is the alcohol a good idea even if the sensation is definitely not coming from water in the ear?

Are you sure you didn’t get some water in there while showering or something? But, I suppose putting alcohol in there could cause problems if you’ve got something really wrong with your ear. Especially if you do use rum.

  5. On a related note, does anybody know how to teach a pre-schooler how to blow his nose? You’d think “Close your mouth and blow” would be sufficient, but it is not working. I got to watch Thomas the Tank Engine at 1:00am because somebody woke-up on account of nose drippings.

Don’t do it! I’ve gotten to spend the last week with a 6 year old sleeping on my head, because I was swayed by his sweet adorable cuteness. He’s now been cut off, and is sleeping on the floor when he wakes up. Hopefully, this will transition to continuing to sleep in his bed.
A kid who learns that he gets to watch Thomas at 1 AM if he just wakes up, is going to figure out a way to do it. And then, you’ll get the joy of lots of early morning Thomas.

  7. He couldn’t breath laying down. We had to do something. Granted, the risk is still there, the amount of stuff coming from his nose with tremendous.

  8. MH,
I don’t know the age cut-off for using a suction bulb (or whatever you call the thingies), but I’d suction out the nostrils, then follow up with saline spray. Or maybe just use saline spray.

Stare at the noise pattern on a no-broadcast channel? watch videos of Wendy’s dance contest?
But, then, my kids are terrible sleepers. Who am I to give advice.

  10. I should have tried the bulb. I didn’t even think of that. And I may try the candle thing, but obviously that’s not a 1:00 a.m. lesson. Anyway, I deliberately picked Thomas as it is boring compared to the shows he is most into now.
