Weekend Journal

What would we be doing if we didn't have kids?

Steve was down for the count with bronchitis this weekend, so I had to handle most kid related chores this weekend.

I took Jonah to basketball practice on Saturday and got him dressed up for the last soccer game of the season this morning. It snowed a bit over night and it was still sticking to the roofs. We packaged him with two shirts under his soccer jersey. I made him wear my black, opaque stockings under his shorts. He was horrified. "I look like a ballet dancer!", he wailed. I should have taken a picture to show future girlfriends.

I hung around on the edge of the field talking to the dads until the coaches finally decided to cancel the game, because the snow was covering the lines on the field. Although the dads and I were freezing and grumbling, the boys were romping like puppies through the snow. Even the boys without stockings under their shorts were frolicking and kicking the ball up in the air, though their legs were bright red. Kids don't let chapped knees interfere with a good time.

I took Jonah to CCD. Both boys needed a trip to the mall for haircuts and for cheap sneakers at Sports Authority. I made the kids three meals a day. Steve lay on the floor and putting together a Lego airplane with Ian for hours and hours.

We fit in a little time for ourselves. I ran to the salon for half an hour to get my eyebrows ripped out. That's always fun. My parents watched the kids for an hour, so we could go out for Thai food. However, most of my time this weekend was spent driving the kids around, making sure they were fed, doing their laundry, getting food for the week, or cleaning up everyone's messes. I'm just getting around to reading the paper now.

After we put the kids to bed at 9, Steve and I sat on the sofa and tried to remember what we did before we had kids. What did we do with our time? Studied and drank, I think, but it's been a long time.

  1. We found out last week. Went away for a week together for the first time in 27 years (had done 2 or 3 nights 4 times previously). We missed the kids and grandkids intermittently and played and slept hard and walked and talked and shopped and read whenever we wanted to. Heaven. Good to be home, though.

  2. I remember thinking that reading the Sunday Times was important and took a lot of time. Also sleeping later.
