So, Bernie Madoff is in court and is likely to plea guilty. He is looking at life in prison.
Somehow that doesn't seem good enough. We here at 11D are soliciting proposals from the readers for alternative punishments for Madoff. And his wife, who is trying keep him paws on $62m, deserves something special, too.

I’m trying to be less vindictive for Lent, so I’m going to pass. (I also gave-up sweets and Unfogged.)

Actually, this seems a case where he should not really be going to jail. He is not going to do this again, or commit any other crime. He should be sentenced to working as a public toilet attendent.

1. He cannot change his name, ever.
2. He has to carry a sign everywhere he goes during any probationary period, listing his crimes.
3. He has to make a personal apology to each person damaged by his crime.
4. He must do “scared straight” lectures for at risk populations in his area.
I don’t think anything will work, though. He has committed a crime that demonstrates either lack of empathy or willingness to dismiss other people’s consequences; as far as I know we don’t, as a society, know how to fix this kind of person.

I can’t remember where I read this, but one blogger suggested that maybe Madoff is wanted on charges in some other country – Saudi Arabia, China, etc. Maybe he can be extradited – or at least threatened with this to make him more cooperative with ongoing investigations. Renditions anyone?
