The Daily News is reporting the Caroline Kennedy bowed out because of tax and nanny issues.
Dudes, green cards and social security. It's not that hard.
UPDATE: He nominated Rep. Gillibrand. Yeah, I know. Who?
Leave saving the world to the men? I don't think so.

Ah, come on: the 20th isn’t even really all that upstate! At least I’ve vaguely heard of her before all this happened, and I’m in the 24th and consider myself politically ignorant.
Before Clinton won the seat, she promised in speeches up here to really pay attention to upstate issues–then, of course, it was down in the NYC sphere all the way. But at least she talked a good line as for that, and I got no sense of that at all from Kennedy.
The way everyone focuses on downstate (and the way I have to qualify “I’m from New York–no, not the city” abroad), and looking around at local government and the messes up here really make you think some days that it’d have been better if NYC had split off all those years ago. (Yes, I know that was proposed by NYC pols, not upstate ones.)
No idea if Gillibrand will be any good or if Kennedy would have been bad. But show the north and west a little love!

Gillibrand = Not Cuomo. It’s an anagram, in a secret runic language known only to governors…

I love Gillibrand (she is my rep). Her office has been helpful when contacted by my daughter’s school and, most importanty, she works really hard. Love the fact she is our first upstate senator since the 1880’s. She lives in my county, but comes from a long line of Democrats in her family.

It looks like a good choice. Dartmouth, UCLA law, partner at Boies, Schiller & Flexner, and won an election two years ago. And, a working mother.
She doesn’t seem to be a member of the aristocracy, nor a NYC insider.

So — more about her family? How many kids? how old are they?
She seems like a fine choice, and hopefully she has the political savvy to keep the seat for the Dems.
I also thought Caroline would be fine, but I think I’ll believe that more in retrospect if she keeps trying to serve, rather than disappearing after a setback. That’s the problem with “rich princesses” that they give up when the going gets tough, because it’s not worth aggravation. Giving up now might have been the right choice, but if she gives up permanently, she’s kind of proving that she wasn’t the right person for the job.

Her kids, according to Wikipedia, are 4 years and 7 months. Also according to Wp, her family is politically connected.

Caroline really screwed up with the press, too. I think was another problem in her camp.
Hey, just because I never heard of her, doesn’t mean that I was dissing upstate NY. A big shout out to my alma mater SUNY Binghamton. I was just watching MSNBC at the gym and learning more about her. She’s fine enough. And I”m really glad that Andrew Cuomo didn’t get it.

Maybe she can find some money for Binghamtom to do something with its airport. Unless it already has.

As much as I would love a senator from the NYC area, it is upstate that is really dying. I get so depressed whenever we drive up that way. I had a feeling it was going to be a woman – and the other non-Caroline choices were not all that exciting.
So let me get this – we paid taxes on our non-English speaking nanny (way back when) and were helpful in her getting a green card (she was l already married to an American) and yet poor rich Caroline Kennedy had problems in finding legitimate help.
I worked for some real movers and shakers in NYC – you would be surprised how many of them had illegal help. They were hardly paying these women more than $300/wk while they lived in their penthouses on 5th Avenue. A bottle of wine was easily worth $300 – but not the person who took care of your children.
Legal help was expensive – we paid around $600/wk when you took taxes into the figure and that was in the late 90’s. Over they years my husband felt he had been ripped off when he found out what all the partners were paying for their help. When we finally let her go (the kids were in school and it was so expensive) she complained because no one would hire her at those prices again.
So much for spreading the wealth.

What would Gov P be thinking of with this? The whole process seems inept. Why leak the dirt on C. Kennedy? It doesn’t seem like this will improve his position with her camp, or with BHO. And, by passing over Cuomo, he (a) disses him, and (b) leaves him free to challenge in the 2010 gubernatorial primary.
All I can think is that the guv was pals with Sen G’s lobbyist father, back in his (NYS) senate days.
