At work today, my goof-ball colleagues walked around with Cousin It wigs and Ronald Reagan masks. Steve took off from work, so that we could go to both Halloween parades at the kids’ schools. The other parents at his job ditched early to go trick or treating with their kids. It’s a day when family trumps work. A good day.
Here are my kids. Ian is Obi Wan Kanobi. Jo is a barbarian. To be very specific, Jonah is part Vandal, part Viking, and part William Wallace.
What did your kids do?

My kids asked to go to the after-school program today. Since I had a lot to do, I gratefully let them. At 5 I picked them up, and by 6 we were at a friend’s house (though we have a decent t-or-t-ing neighborhood, we’ve gotten into the tradition of going with our friends). The kids are picking over their candy now, anticipating making a deal with the Halloween Fairy, who likes to exchange candy for toys.

Ours were a cave girl an a sabre toothed tiger (very important, not an ordinary tiger). Dad went as a caveman. Trick or treating isn’t going great in our neighborhood this year. Not sure why, but think it might be ’cause it’s a Friday.

Swords are inherently cooler than any other weapons.
We got our son in a fireman costume and did three houses before coming home to pass-out treats and dig the mulch in the front yard (our usual evening activity).

The kids were a dragon and Pocahontas and we trick-or-treated at a dormitory on Tuesday night. The students hosting the event also had face-painting, some simple games, and a scary room.
Tonight happened to be the night of a major unrelated campus event, so the kids went on the ferris wheel with my husband and C did that ride with swings. The kids got glow-sticks, decorated treat bags, and C beaded a bracelet (the latter two tables were run by a sorority). There was a ball-toss area, but no moonbounce and none of the inflatable obstacle courses that made last year’s event so memorable.
My husband and C have gone out again to see the bonfire, which will be the size of a small house. Meanwhile, I’ve got all the lights on the street-side of the house off and am lying low, since I didn’t buy candy this year, not knowing if it would be worthwhile with such spectacular doings a couple blocks away. This is probably the biggest night of the year (and there will be a parade tomorrow), but there’s a big campus-wide shindig every month or two.

I made an awesome lego costume and was thrilled that my 7-year-old wore it to two parties. Then he became a pirate for trick-or-treating. I wore the lego even though it was too small and gave me wicked claustrophia.

22 month old lasted about a heart beat in his Lion costume. We hit some houses on the street and then we stayed in to hand out candy which was a blast. We had so many people that we threw in his candy as well to avoid the temptation.
