The Autism Rights Movement. We’re here. We’re quirky. Get used to it.
Two articles about how hetero women are turned on by chicks. I’m surprised that my favorite pervy blog, Unfogged, didn’t pick up on it.
Why computers don’t help poor kids. (via Loren on Facebook)
Is Google Making Us Stupid? I meant to do a post on this article this week, but didn’t have a chance.
Judith Warner is grossed out by the obsession of men with their daughter’s purity at a Christian Father-Daughter Chastity Dance.
Too bad about Tim "Happy Cheeks" Russert.
Brooks writes about Obama’s positions on education with a nice shout out to Andy Rotherham.

The findings of the computer voucher study were pretty discouraging. A few thoughts:
1. I don’t know anything about Romanians, but in my experience, Russians at least are more likely to leave children home at earlier ages than Americans would. I had a close Russian single mom friend who would leave her 5-year-old locked up at home. Likewise, the first Russian copy of Cosmo back in the 90s featured an advice column which encouraged a single mom who wanted to date that it was perfectly OK to leave a 5-year-old home alone.
2. These were Romanians. There’s got to be a lot less Romanian-language material on the internet, so the computer voucher kids might be spending more time on mindless activities (games, visual material) than would an English-speaking child. I don’t know if they set the kids up with filters, but some subset of the voucher kids must have been spending all of their waking hours looking for pron.
3. Here’s a very interesting quote from the article: “Indeed, the authors found that when they looked specifically at families with stay-at-home moms who may be more present and able to police computer use, the negative effects of vouchers were greatly reduced.”
4. Maybe a computer and a bunch of educational software would be better? (Not that I’ve been super impressed with much of the educational software I’ve seen.)
