  1. They are super-adorable. We still haven’t figured out the homework thing at our house. We don’t have much right now, and most of it comes in the form of special projects and “challenges.” But, I see battles coming up if we don’t schedule a specific time for it and start enforcing now to prepare.

  2. Learn from my mistakes. Don’t put off homework until later in the evening. I thought that the kids needed a break when they come home from school, so I waited until after dinner to do homework. I thought they would be fresher after a break and a good meal. Bad move. Once they relax, you have no hope of getting work out of them.
Do it when they first walk in the door, while their brains are still thinking about school work. Give snacks while they’re doing their work. Tell them that if they do their work quickly, then they’ll have more time to play. We set up in the kitchen, so I can make dinner, while they’re doing their work. Have pens and glue and tape readily available in the kitchen.

  3. We’ve been in such a state of chaos in the afternoons/evenings that a homework plan has been difficult. I’ve been on an afternoon/early evening teaching schedule. Hate. It. But tomorrow’s my last day of classes, finals are next week, and then I go back to (believe it or not, I’m happy about this) teaching 7 am classes. I can pick up my kids from school again! Yay!
By the way, I’m dying to see more talk about the writers’ strike on the blogs. But I’m also excited by the extension of the vouchers debate. I can’t wait to write/talk more about it. I have a half-written post for my blog, and I just need time to finish it.
