The anecdote about a $34 an hour job going unfilled seems pretty dubious.

I can’t think of any job no matter how hard and dirty going begging when the price is right. I suspect that the missing ingredients in these stories are benefits and stability. You can clean toilets (as a retired Coast Guard guy I know does) with good medical insurance and kno
wages–benefits–insurance, etc.
Garbage–MIL in line for job.

I can’t imagine any job no matter how hard and dirty going begging when the price is right. Also, I suspect that the mystery ingredients in these tales are lack of benefits and lack of dependable work. You can clean toilets with a smile on your face (as a retired Coast Guard guy I know does at a National Park) if you have good health insurance and job security.
My mother in law has encountered at least one person whose life ambition was to drive a garbage truck.
