Spreadin’ Love

Two articles in yesterday’s Times on boys lagging behind in school. Tamar Lewin writes “Nationwide, about 72 percent of the girls in the high school class of 2003 — but only 65 percent of the boys — earned diplomas, a gender gap that is far more pronounced among minorities, according to a report being released today by the Manhattan Institute.” Also, CUNY is getting into trouble by trying to even the gender balance at Medgar Evers.

Loved this story about a boy who finds great kindness from his two amazing moms and even the local Catholic school. It got me a little misty.

I liked reading about Melissa’s struggles with a chore chart and allowance. We need to do something like that around here, and I have some half baked ideas. Mostly it involves me screaming at everyone “PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF. I’M NOT THE MAID. IF YOU DON’T PICK UP YOUR SOCKS THIS MINUTE, I’M GOING TO BEAT YOU SENSELESS.” I go for the subtle approach.

  1. I always scream “I AM WASTING THE BEST YEARS OF MY LIFE CLEANING UP AFTER YOU!”
They hung their heads in guilt the first 20 times, now they give me a look that says “If you weren’t my mother, and I wasn’t scared to do it, I would be flipping you off right now.”
I think we should write a parenting book.
