It’s Fleet Week in New York City. Sadly I’m missing it, because I’m a boring old fart in New Jersey.
The uniforms and short hair don’t do much for me, but boosting the number of straight men in Manhattan is always amusing.
So, in honor of Fleet Week, the question of the day is for the straight women and gay men, what type of guy turns your head. Trim and uniformed? Goateed and bookish? Gelled and metrosexual?

Given how many gay men I know who have been in the Navy, I would suggest this may be an erroneous assumption… š

Theoretically straight men. “Don’t ask, don’t tell.”
I have a weakness for the trim and uniformed, myself, but I realize that’s entirely superficial. . . .

While not making any general statements, the bevy of cute young sailors during Fleet Week is certainly picturesque.

I’ve been spotting sailors all over town and haven’t seen any hotties yet. I wonder, is it mandatory that they wear their uniforms? I always think it’s a bit odd. If I was the captain of the ship, I’d give them a free dress week. As for me, I’ve always been drawn to the slightly scruffy look. Jeans, teeshirt and Converse hightops. Mmmmmm.

i like all manner of men. a uniform goes a long way towards increasing a person’s hottness. like fireman? even the ugly ones are still unbelievably hot. i have only two rules. one is no overly groomed eyebrows and the second is strong hands.

Gotta agree with Paige – I don’t really think Fleet Week boosts the percentage of straight men here in NYC. And I have that on good authority; my first husband spent a couple decades in the Navy.

There is something about a uniform, I admit. But too many military types lack necks, so that’s a problem. I prefer the younger slimmer types, uniformed or not. Goatees are fine, bushy beards not. Unwashed hair of any kind is a no; I can’t take the fashionably greasy look of some hipsters.
Nice glasses are almost always a plus. Mmm. Bookish is good, but not pedantic; I’m not interested in being anyone’s disciple.
And a sense of humor that appreciates irony, the absurd, and sarcasm is an absolute must.

Oh, that’s why there are all those sailors around. They look so bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
I’m partial to ridiculously skinny boys with close-cropped hair. Good thing at least one of them likes slightly chubby girls.

As a bi-girl whose tastes in boya is in theory quite predictable — sort of like ianqui above, tho the hair can be longer — the Navy boys on the streets fit that relatively well. (In practice, when I have partnered with boys, back in the day, it was just as often with fatter and hairier men than I’d “prefer”: other factors, e.g. intellect, actually turned the light on.)
But Fleet Week mostly makes me want to cry, even though it’s mosre Army and Marines going to Iraq. All I can do is hand them cards for the G.I. Rights Hotline and cross my fingers internally.

What is it with this alleged shortage of straight men in Manhattan? Is it true? Should I quit my university job in the midwest, and move to the set of ‘Sex and the City’, to enjoy the attentions of bevies of beautiful bodacious Big Apple babes?
