Two Heads and Other Moronic Notes Before Bed

After Lost, I was treated to wise words from our leader last night. I had the whole sofa to myself, because Steve was listening to the speech on his Kloss radio while reading simultaneous posts from nerdy bloggers. Those bloggers. What losers.

Anyway, I stretched out on the sofa armed with Granta to read during those long clapping sessions. Saw that soldier’s mom and the Iranian woman embrace. Then I had to see that Hallmark moment another bazillion times today along with some heart warming commentary from Katie Couric. I’m all warm and glowy now.

Social security. Yeah. Iran. Yeah. Aids program. Yeah. But what about those two heads behind Bush.

Dennis Hassert. That guy is an Eastern Island Idol. He has to be the least charismatic Speaker of the House in decades. Sure, Tip was drunk, but we liked that about him.

And then there’s old Dick, twitching and smirking to the left of Bush’s head. Operating that remote that makes Bush’s mouth open and shut.

Is it just me or are those heads very distracting?

Every few weeks, I morph into Michael Keaton in Night Shift. He’s a manic character who carries around a tape recorder to keep track of the hundreds of business ideas that come to him during the day. “Feed mayonnaise to fish in the tank. So when you the kill the fish, the tuna salad is already made.”

Normally I’m slightly manic, but on these over caffeinated days, it’s over the top. I can’t stop myself. I come up with small business ventures. I usually call up my friend, Susan, who’s always level headed. We’ve been friends for years, and she’s the one who will advise me that it’s not a good idea to jump onto the subway tracks on a dare. (Did it anyway.)

On these days, I’ll call Suze with one stupid idea after another. “So, are you ready for this? It’s like Starbucks, but instead of coffee… are you ready?… they serve TEA.” “Laura, you’re an idiot.” I’m not sure why periodically I become demonically entrepreneurial, because I am not really interested in running a tea company or anything. I blame the large quantities of liquids that I consume that either contain stimulants or depressants; rarely anything without those additives.

Anyhow, I drafted a couple of book proposals today and sent them to old, level-headed (boring) Suze and she didn’t poo-poo them. We’ll see how it all looks tomorrow when the manic levels return to normal.

  1. Every day at lunch, my colleagues and I come up with a get-rich quick scheme. Some of them turn into good ideas that we won’t get rich off of, but are good ideas nonetheless. Our latest one is to do a tech help webcast for our campus, a la Car Talk. I think it will work.

  2. Please tell me there was not a new Lost Wed night – that you watched a rerun. I didn’t bother watching TV because of the SOTU. If I missed Lost, I am going to be seriously cranky.

  3. don’t worry, abu. It was a re-rerun. I missed the beginning few episodes, so I’m trying to catch up. Not it’s helping me figure out what is going on. Polar bears. Crazy French ladies. Doors in the ground. I love TV shows in which I’m completely befuddled. That’s why we’re also watching Carnevale. What’s it about? Haven’t the foggiest.

  4. Carnivale is superb! Lost is pretty good, too. I hope they eventually explain the reason why the actors still look so gorgeous (presumably the island’s strange power? because they’re all dead and in the afterlife?).

  7. Like other commentors have said, the tea idea has already been taken. Unfortunately it doesn’t work as well as thought. There are alot of tea afficianados in the big cities, but even more tea ignorant people. It would take way more work than you would want to give out. But I would love it, as well as my ‘tea freak’ friends.

  8. This is way late, but congrats on the book ideas! I’m a published computer book author, but not currently working. I have a non-fiction idea knocking around, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth writing up a proposal — if I’d actually have time to work on it. I think I may work on it gradually, and if it actually starts to look like a book, then see if I can find a publisher. I’ll be interested to hear about the progress of your proposals!
