Blogs, War, and Bloody Children

I went over to the Daily Kos, because Instapundit questioned bloggers who call themselves activitists, but take advantage of certain benefits that go to journalists. Is there a conflict there?

Anyhow, check out this post by Kos. It shows photos of children covered by the blood of their parents who were killed by US troops. Powerful stuff.

  1. Agreed. Very powerful. I’m not sure that there’s necessarily a conflict here. Many journalists are very political, indeed activist, in the type of material they publish, in the type of journalism they engage in. Consider the investigative reporting (IR) done by Mother Jones and others. The point of that IR is to, ultimately, get the reader politically engaged in a way she might not otherwise be so inclined. I don’t think it should be any different with blogs. I’m from the school that thinks good blogging and good journalism should go together. But this is predicated on a belief in the “activist journalist.” I don’t think journalists should simply be reporting news, but also conveying the significance and importance of what the news is. They’re humans too, and do have a right to be outraged by what they see (and I think in the case of these pictures, any sensible person would be outraged).
