And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself-Well…How did I get here?

Shane McGowan is brilliant. (via Maud Newton)

  1. Shane was great with the Pogues, but this is a Talking Heads song: Once in a Lifetime. The video won video of the year and is fantastic and the song is a highlight of the movie Stop Making Sense

  2. I once watched the Pogues in a small room, and chatted to the guy beside me about them (I’d never seen them before). After a long conversation about their merits, the guy beside me wandered off to meet the band Backstage. My friend who’d invtied me said – ‘Do you know who that was?’. It was the bassist’s boyfriend, Elvis Costello. Nice guy, but I had no idea.
As for Shane, I’m surprised he’s alive.

  3. How is that you have such access to bands, harry? Great story. Terribly jealous.
I saw the Pogues twice in the late eighties. The best concerts I’ve even been to. Incredible amounts of energy. You know, Elvis produced them and married the bassist.
    Yeah, Shane. That old drunk.
    Feeling better?

  4. I’ve also made tea for Paul Weller, who was (contrary to his reputation) an absolute charmer. Both EC and PW were via politics (organising, or being friends with the organiser, of benefits they were doing). Though I like them both, I’m not a huge fan; whereas the guy I had dinner with recently is probably the only contemporary star I am at all a fan of (and I’m a big fan). That was just good luck.
