The Swing State Voters

A huge effort is underway to register new voters in swing states, like Ohio and Pennsylvania. Democrats have been especially active in minority and low income districts.

I noticed that McSweeney’s is having its writers, like Dave Eggers, call up artsy college students to encourage their votes.

Meanwhile, I had the misfortune to catch the senile ramblings of Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes last night. Rooney was babbling something about the fact that he didn’t think that nonvoters should suddenly start to vote, since they were almost certainly dumber than he was. He said if you can’t name your two senators, you shouldn’t vote.

I think if Andy can’t get around to trimming his eyebrows, he shouldn’t be allowed to vote either.

Talk amongst yourselves.

UPDATE: Perhaps nonvoters aren’t dumb, Andy. In fact, they may be more rational than you and know exactly how little impact their one vote will have. Yeah, on the line to buy a lotto ticket, they have calculated that the probability that any one of them will decide the outcome is on the order of .00000001.

  1. I could have sworn Andy Rooney had died. Are you sure it was him? Given that there was only, say, about eight or nine subjects he ever talked about, maybe they’ve just digitized all his previous appearances, and are replaying them over and over, while allowing the interns to mess with his eyebrows on the computer before running each tape.

  2. On the voters issue… has anyone / blogger done any analysis on whether the hurricanes would radically impair Florida’s voters? And if so, if that could seriously tip the Electoral vote one way or the other? Not that I think the whole election rides on that, but I hadn’t seen it discussed.

  3. Personally, I think the people in Florida should be the first ones to worry about climate change and the Bush administration’s impact on the environment. I heard on the news that they haven’t been hit by this many hurricanes in a season since the 1870s. Or was it the 1850s?
Right before the last election, back when I was living in a swing state, I got multiple messages from Martin Sheen on my answering machine. Now that I’m in a Traditionally Republican State where Kerry is nonetheless only trailing Bush by a few points, I have no idea if there will be celebrity phone calls, and if so, who will be the celebrity voice. (Hopefully not Andy Rooney.)
