At noon, the four of us trudged across a soccer field with two beat up folding chairs, two bottles of gaterade, a pair of cleats that Jonah refused to wear, a DS for Ian, and a 500 page political theory reader. Yes, I swore that I was going to stop working on weekends, but that new resolution hasn't gone into effect yet.
For the couple of years, the coaches have been putting Jonah on defense. It was a little surprising at first, since Jonah is small boned like my side of the family and is fairly quick on his feet. He is built for offense. But Jonah plays like a blodger. He roars across the field and throws himself at his opponent with no concern for his personal safety. He's a kamakazi pilot with a shin guards. What he lacks in finesse, he makes up for with shear insanity. I like that about him.
I probably shouldn't have brought the book, because I ended up chatting with fellow parents for most of the game. One invited us to the American Legion picnic next week. Another gave me the dirt on the local school. Building that social capital.
We had to bring the computer game for Ian, because he is growing more and more impatient to play sports, too. Last week, he kept charging onto the field with the big kids and jumping into the net. I had to run out and haul him away as he cried. We can't sign Ian up for the regular teams, because he can't follow directions in large groups. Other five year olds can wait patiently in line and kick the ball in the right direction. Luckily, the new school has a special needs soccer team, which is going to get started later this month.
After the game, I walked/ran 3-1/2 miles on the tread mill. Along with reducing work on the weekend, my other resolution is to cook proper meals and exercise. We'll see how long that lasts.
In between exercise and soccer was a lot of cramming for tomorrow's lecture on Pericles' Funeral Oration. I was terribly rusty on my Greek history, so I spent much of today on wikipedia.
But now it's 11:30 and I have to be up at 6:00. More posts after class tomorrow.
