I’ve been following the police slowdown in New York City very careful. I have some thoughts and will get to it later today. Right now, I have funky intros from two old cop TV dramas. What wins – Barney Miller or Night Court?

A long-time career police officer once told me that “Barney Miller” was the single most accurate cop show he’d ever watched–more than “Hill Street Blues,” more than “NYPD Blue.” I’ve never heard anything remotely similar about “Night Court” (which I watched obsessively and thoroughly back in the first round of NBC’s “must-see TV” campaigns). So, take that for whatever it’s worth.

Don’t make me choose!!!
Night Court has the benefit of having 2 female characters who are part of the workplace. That breaks the tie.
(As an aside, why did I think I wouldn’t like House of Cards? Two eps in and I’m loving it.)

The original British version from the 90’s is great! I liked it better than the US version but then I live in a parliamentary system so the political machinations were more familiar. Borgen is fab too but is also a parliamentary system with the added twist of governing with coalitions.

My sister and I binge-watched episodes 1-8 of House of Cards over Christmas and thought it was fantastic. As an added bonus, both of us can now imitate Kevin Spacey extremely well.
Barney Miller was great. Night Court was watchable. I think there was an episode of Community that focused on reuniting the cast.

They should do a gritty remake of Barney Miller. It should be pretty easy, since it was already about as gritty as you could get for a prime time show of that era.

Was Abe Vigoda in Night Court? Because if not, Barney Miller wins without any question.

He’s still alive too.

Choice of theme music isn’t even close: Barney Miller.

Barney Miller was what a kid watched when he outgrew Happy Days. If I remember correctly, it was on at nine-o-clock, as opposed to eight-o-clock. It addressed more grown up themes like dealing with bureaucracy, drinking bad coffee, and attempting to beat the stock market.
