The Grind of a Community College Professor

A number of my friends are professors at community colleges. Steve’s a former community college professor. It’s thankless work cleaning up for the sloppy public school education and supporting students who have huge personal burdens. But it’s also incredibly important work as they help to give these kids the tools to make a decent salary at a proper job.

In New York City, these professors teach five classes per semester and are expected to publish. All for $61,000 per year. At CUNY, these classes can have up to 50 students per class.

My friends are currently grading 250 exams right now. That seriously sucks.

  1. Any sense for the real hourly wage of these folks? The stats I see about real hourly wages typically break down all of education in a lump that looks to be squeaing by … but I suspect there’s a wide standard deviation within this group. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t19.htm

In Chicago some salaried industries are widely known topay less than minimum wage when you adjust for the incredibly long hours. (Law, architecture, advertising are at the top of the list.)

  2. Related: I’m a year and a half away from getting four weeks vacation (in addition to holidays, sick days, and the period between Christmas and New Years). I think I’m European.
